reporting live from my couch

i’ve learned some things on my jersey sabbatical – things i never would have known if i were in the city.  i rarely watch tv in the city – there are just too many more interesting things things to do, even if it’s just taking a walk around the block.  i will admit that if i was home working past 9:oo pm i would usually have law & order on in the background –  but having seen every law & order episodes way too many times i can no longer even stand to have it on.

in any case, here i am alone on a saturday night, feeling pretty low.   in a desperate attempt to find something to watch, i came across a show i had never heard about before and the title made me a bit curious.  “my strange addiction”.

this has to be the strangest show i’ve ever seen – ok, i’ve really only seen law & order, criminal minds & without a trace, but still – my strange addiction?   i hit the select button.  i am truly in awe.  in awe about the very strange things people are doing and even more in awe that people go on tv to apprise the world.

addiction #1   crystal cannot stop eating household cleanser.  comet.  she has been eating comet for over 30 years.  she loves the taste and the gritty texture. she just can’t seem to stop.  the dentist has just informed her that she must have all of her teeth extracted because they were dangerously deteriorated.

addiction #12  samantha is addicted to tanning.  she visits a tanning salon three times a day – – a day! in addition to that she lies out in the sun every chance she gets.  the dermatologist told her she has a 75% chance of getting melanoma so she cut back to tanning once a day.

stay tuned for next weeks episode where we will meet a woman who cannot stop herself from eating couch cushion innards.   she is addicted to the foam.

i feel better now.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
