mike & george

this is mike, the best mailman in america. i just love him.

everyday mike brings the mail into the building in a bundle held together by a heavy duty rubber band.  he than removes the rubber band and places it on the ledge above the mailboxes and proceeds to put the envelopes into the proper boxes. each day i can count on seeing a new rubber band, sometimes two, on the ledge above the mailboxes.   it’s always good to know there’s a heavy duty rubber band available if needed because generally i just have the small light-weight, pretty neon colored ones i buy at thr rainbow store.  by the end of the day, it’s always gone.   is it possible that everyday someone from the building is in need of a rubber band?  it’s a mystery.

here is yesterday’s rubber band.

this is george:
he lives up on the 3rd floor.  he’s 81 and has lived in this building for something like 48 years.  sometimes george can get a little paranoid and claims that people are stealing his mail.  the other day mike delivered a book for george so i took the book up to george right away so that he wouldn’t worry.  i knocked on his door and he invited me in.  i noticed on his kitchen counter he had a gargantuous pile of  heavy duty rubber bands – like 48 years worth.
mystery solved.

george passed away on august 20, 2010.  r.i.p. my friend.
