warning! this is truly disturbing . . . .

this is joe:

and this is his story as reported by the ny post:

Joseph Vallenti celebrated his 96th birthday with a big slice of his favorite apple strudel cake, but there was one filling he didn’t count on — a rat.

“Something isn’t right,” family members recall the Commack man saying after tucking into the store-baked “Signature Series” cake from King Kullen supermarket.

Vallenti fell ill with stomach pains and diarrhea. So Neil Gold, who is dating Vallenti’s niece and lives with the victim, investigated the remaining cake — and allegedly found a five-inch-long rat’s tail still attached to the rodent’s hindquarters.

“I saw . . . something sticking out,” Gold said Friday after bringing the allegedly infested strudel to the law offices of his friend, attorney Ed Yule.
I flipped it over and saw the whole tail bleeding into the cake.”

i am truly at a loss for words.

3 day mission

there are 3 days left until my birthday. the start of a brand new year.  since i didn’t keep any of my new year’s promises, i decided to do it a little differently this time.  over the next 3 days i will give away 50 things, list 50 things in my life i am grateful for, give 50 sincere compliments and meditate for 50 minutes each day.  i’ll keep track of it all and post it in 3 days –  here is the start of the list of things for which i am grateful:

my wonderful parents   the peeps in the front row & the rest of the family!

boo-bear,  being born in america, living in the city & my car.  that’s five – 45 more coming up – but first i’m going to take ivan out for a spin around the block & dole out some compliments!

“glory be”

that was one of my grandmother’s favorite sayings.   if you told her something outrageous or surprising her response would be “glory be”  or,  “oh my land”.  “for heaven’s sake” was another common phrase she used.  i loved when she said those things and i miss hearing her voice.

happy birthday, gram –  i love you!

100 today

pop-pop joe was my mom’s father.  i didn’t know him very well because he died when i was only in third or fourth grade.  my memories of him include donuts. he always brought us donuts when we saw him and he was always happy.  pop-pop joe was a big man and a huge golfer.  apparently he was quite the athlete in his younger years and attended prep school on both a baseball  and football scholarship.  he was a scratch golfer – runner up for ct state champ.  he died way too young but i think he had a whole lot of fun along the way.

today he would have been 100 years old.  happy birthday pop – pop joe!

September 29, 1905

this is gram on her 80th birthday. today she would have been 105.  i still think about her every single day and always when i make my bed in the morning.

gram was a master bed maker. she used to let me think i was helping her make the beds at the lake house when i was a little kid.  i can still see her pulling the sheets up really tight after making the most perfect hospital corners at the bottom ends.  then gram would turn back the top  part of the sheet just the right amount and flatten it out  using several firm swipes of her hand  – then  tuck the sides real tight under the mattress.  you could easily bounce a quarter on any bed gram made.  next came the bedspread.  she would flip the bedspread high into the air and then center it perfectly onto the bed making sure it hung down on both sides exactly even, swiping her hands across the top of the bed again and again.  it never came out less than perfect.

gram was one of the kindest people i ever knew –  the kind of person you just wouldn’t ever want to disappoint.  that is why to this day, i can never put a pair of shoes on a table and why you could bounce a quarter on my bed.

happy birthday, gram.  i miss you –
